============   Further Information  ============

KING GEORGE VI (1936 – 1952)

George VI had never really expected to become King,  this was brought about in 1936 by the abdication of his elder brother Edward VIII.   He married Elizabeth Bowes Lyon and they had two children, Elizabeth, born in 1926, and Margaret, born in 1930.  Their indomitable attitude made them much loved and appreciated by all throughout the awful period of the Second World War.   The war was without doubt a contributory factor towards King George’s death and he finally succumbed to lung cancer on 6 February 1952.  Queen Elizabeth became known following his death as ‘Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother’, and was held in great esteem by all; she died at the grand old age of 101 on 30 March 2002.  His daughter Elizabeth is the reigning Queen of England.

GEORGE VI Sovereign:

The only currency sovereigns struck during the reign of George VI were from the earlier George V dies that were all dated 1925. Therefore, the only sovereign bearing the bust of George VI is the one offered here (as part of the set).  The coin is struck to proof standard ‘with mirror-like’ fields as illustrated. The effigy on the obverse was modelled by Mr. T. H. Paget from a personal sitting, and the reverse displays Pistrucci’s St.George slaying the Dragon.

Description and details:

Obverse: The bare head of the King to the left. The small letters H.P. standing for Humphrey Paget below truncation at rear.

Legend: GEORGIVS VI D:G:BR:OMN:REX F:D:IND:IMP.

Reverse: St.George with streamer from helmet, mounted and slaying the dragon with sword. Date below exergue line with B.P. to right.

Edge: Plain.

GEORGE VI Half Sovereign:

There were no currency half-sovereigns struck during the reign that bear the bust of George VI.  The only half sovereigns struck were those proof half sovereigns issued in the set offered here.

The effigy for the obverse was modelled by Mr Thomas Humphrey Paget (1893-1974) and he was granted a personal sitting by the King.  The reverse once more features Pistrucci’s St.George slaying the Dragon.

Description and details.

Date below exergue line with B.P. for Benetto Pistrucci to right. The coin is struck to proof standard with mirror like finish.

Edge: Plain.
